Tanzania… the very name conjures up images of long tusked elephants, huge maned lions and giant buffalo. This is the Africa of Hemingway and Ruark. It is indeed one of the great African big game destinations. In addition to the dangerous game, Tanzania offers a unique selection of plains game that is different from the Southern African species.
As with any African country, the quality of the safari operators vary greatly. Through years of experience, we have selected one outfitter through whom we send all our bookings. Our selection is based on three principles:
1. Prime safari areas and trophy quality.
2. World-class camps, excellent service and attention to detail.
3. Very high standard of ethics and professionalism.
Tanzania is a large country with high number of government designated hunting blocks. Competition for the prime hunting blocks is fierce among the operators. Most Tanzanian safari operators control a number of hunting blocks in order to take advantage of the wide range of species spread throughout the country. Our operator in Tanzania controls the most prized hunting blocks available. The strict quotas combined with intense management of the areas will assure the client a truly memorable safari experience.
Tanzania is best known as a destination for the classic full bag safari with 21 days being the norm. This is due to Tanzania game laws that require the prime species be offered only on the 21-day license. These species include but are not limited to elephant, lion, leopard, sable, roan and kudu. The full bag classic safari will typically involve at least 2 areas, which will require additional air charters during the course of the hunt. On average you can expect a daily rate of between $2000 and $3000 for a classic full bag safari.
Tanzania is renowned for excellent cat hunting. Due to limited harvest and sound conservation practices, lion quality is the best on the African continent. The success rate for leopard is excellent, with these cats found in good numbers in all of our areas.
Our safari operator offers some of the best elephant hunting to be found in Tanzania. East African ivory tends to be long and beautiful. Ivory minimums stipulated by the Tanzanian government can make for challenging hunting, although it is not uncommon for ivory of over seven feet in length to be taken in some of our southern areas.
Buffalo and limited plains game can be hunted on a 10-day license. The quality of buffalo hunting is excellent with high success rates, however the costs are more expensive than buffalo hunting in southern Africa.
